Cost/Insurance coverage

-Cost-

I am going to give you guys rough numbers based on my research over the years

Do keep in mind that costing can vary from clinic to clinic and also depends on the severity on your case. Please use these figures only as a rough guide for yourselves.
[Based on 2012-2014 prices]

Pre surgical braces [Depending on type]                                    = MYR 5000 - 16,000
Surgery                                                                                     = MYR 30,000 - MYR 60,000
Post-op braces [Needed to tweak the bite]                                = MYR 1000 to 3000 [Inc retainer]
X rays [You will be taking quite a few throughout the process]    = MYR     600
Wisdom tooth extraction                                                            = MYR     500
Various early consulation fees                                                     = MYR     500

Your surgery cost also greatly depends on the severity of your case and the hospital that you opt to do it at. If funding is a problem you can look into government hospitals but they only take on cases where the bite is really bad so if your problem is minor you probably won't be able to get it done with them.

-Medical Insurance-

If you have a medical insurance plan it would be good to see if you can get anything from it to help cover the surgery. Insurance companies are always trying to give you some excuse not to cover major ops like this so you have to persevere in arguing you case with them.

The more you know about your own condition the better. In jaw cases such as mine the first thing the insurance company will try to prove is that the condition is congenital, meaning that you were born with it. If that is the case your claim could very likely be rejected as you applied for the policy after the supposed health defect. For me it was a matter of proving that I was not born with this condition and showing pictures of myself at a younger age proved that this was unlikely to be a congenital condition.

Secondly the insurance company might attempt to establish that your operation is a cosmetic requirement and not medically required. This greatly depends on the severity of your own condition. My condition was considered medically necessary due to the numerous complication I had eating, breathing and speaking normally AND due to the fact that I had a centimeter of space from my lower front teeth to my upper front teeth. Huge!

To build your case you need letters from your doctors. Get a letter from your orthodontist detailing you condition and why it is necessary. Get another letter from your surgeon. Pay for a consultation at another oral maxillofacial surgeon just as a second opinion. I have 3 letters each stating that my surgery is medically required and not for cosmetic purposes.

In took almost 1 year but we were able to successfully file a claim to our Insurance company and the Surgery cost has been borne by them! Praise God =)

    1. Hi there...when you say schooling, I assume you mean high school? That is too young to do the surgery as you must wait for your bones to stop growing. For girls that is usually 21 and for guys that would be 23, however everyone is different but the earliest to do would be early twenties if not you risk relapse.
