FAQ

1. What is the medical term for your condition?

I had a Class III skeletal deformity which is typified by a lower long jaw, retruded upper jaw and a reverse bite.

2. What surgery did you have done?

In May 2014 I had jaw surgery comprising of  Le Fort I and Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy.
Movements were: Upper jaw advancement – 6mm, impaction – 3mm; Lower jaw setback – 8mm.

3. How long did the surgery take?

Surgery took 3 and a half hours. I was operated on by 2 surgeons.

4. What 'hardware' was used?

Six (6) Titanium plates and numerous screws were used to keep my jaw in Malaysia. As of 2015, I have not had them removed.

5. What is the pain like after surgery?

Honestly the pain is secondary to other issues like the the side effects of General Anesthesia and breathing difficulties due to phlegm build up in the early days. On a pain scale of 1 to 10, I don't think pain went above 5.

I stopped taking painkillers by Day 6 post op.

6. What was your diet like post op?

For the first 2 weeks I was eating through a syringe. The swelling was quite bad that I couldn't open my mouth much. I ate basically anything that could blended and fitted into a syringe ie porridge, spaghetti sauces, rice mixed with meat and veg.

From middle of Week 3 I was able to start putting a spoon in my mouth and my throat muscles were stronger and I was able to swallow things that didn't require blending.
A typical menu is something like this:
Breakfast - Ensure Milk, Half boiled eggs
Lunch - Porridge with small chunks of fish/chicken pork
Snack - Ice cream! mixed with HL High Calcium milk
Dinner - Stir fried oyster chick rice (vegs and chicken cut up really small)

7. And speaking?
I was mumbling badly for the first 2 weeks although the surgeons said I should be speaking quite decently as I wasn't wired shut post surgery. However it took time for my tongue to learn where it should go to pronounce certain words as my mouth felt totally foreign!

After 2 weeks I started speaking much better although sounds with 'B' and 'P' still isn't clear because my lips don't seem to meet to make the sound. But people can understand me on the phone so I guess I am pretty clear!
